Active Assessment: Thinking, learning and assessment in science
Everybody seems to be talking about assessment for learning. This book and CD, by Stuart Naylor and Brenda Keogh with Anne Goldsworthy, show you how to do it.
Using a highly creative approach the book explains in detail how assessment, thinking and learning can be integrated in science lessons. More than 30 different assessment techniques are described, with each one illustrated (in A4 photocopiable format) for two different age ranges. Concise teachers' notes for each technique tell you:
Electronic versions of the activities are provided on the accompanying CD, and the colour poster adds further support for science investigation and enquiry. This resource will be invaluable for primary and secondary teachers, student teachers, science co-ordinators and advisers/inspectors.

CREST Star Investigators
CREST Star Investigators is the new, UK wide science awards scheme for children aged 5 to 12. The scheme enables children to think about, discuss and investigate authentic scientific problems. It operates mostly in science clubs, but may also be used in class time.
The investigations are presented in formats that are exciting and relevant to children, in printed versions of text messages, emails, websites, and in stories. Children are encouraged to work both collaboratively and independently of the club organiser or teacher and to communicate their results in a variety of ways.
The resource packs contain activities, in-depth support notes for teachers and club organisers, CREST Star Investigators badges, stickers to mark the completion of each activity and Star Logs to record the children's progress towards the Awards:

Materials cards for primary schools
These cards are designed to support the teaching of Materials and their properties for pupils aged 5 to 11 (Key Stages 1 and 2). The cards have a scientific word on one side and an unrelated picture on the other. They are self-differentiating and can be used in a variety of ways from 'starter activities' for the whole class to individual work. The pack includes a list of suggested games but the key idea is that children link the words and pictures using the correct scientific reasoning.
Sets were distributed free of charge in January 2003 to all schools with pupils aged 5 to 11.
Additional sets: 5 packs for £10 plus VAT, postage and packing.

PUPPETS: Talking Science • Engaging Science
PUPPETS: Talking Science • Engaging Science is an exciting and innovative way of changing teachers’ practice in primary science lessons. Teachers have a unique opportunity to obtain puppets, stories and professional development at low cost.
The programme is aimed at primary teachers across the UK. It is managed by Brenda Keogh and Stuart Naylor (Millgate House Education Ltd) and based on substantial research carried out with Shirley Simon & Jane Downing (Manchester Metropolital University). The research shows the positive impact that puppets can have on both children and teachers. A small team of trainers across the UK ensures that all schools can get access to the project, which runs until July 2009.
Each teacher will get:
The training and resources are available through local authorities and Science Learning Centres (in England) at highly subsidised cost. Contact your local science adviser to find out about training in your area, or look at the project website www.puppetsproject.com for details of courses each term.
